I had the pleasure to go out on patrol with Meaghan Murphy and Adèle Michon from the Ottawa RiverKeepers Thursday morning.

We were going out to check out effects from the Fireworks festival that has its barges located on the Ottawa River.  In the past, fireworks had been launched from Lac Leamy, but heavy metals from the explosions were settling into the lake’s sediment. Both Meaghan and Adèle were pleased that just by the sheer volume of water moving and spreading the debris, the effects on the Ottawa River were minimal. They were also pleased to see that organizers had cleaned up all they could, and no surface garbage was visible.

Testing the waters

During our trip, we used gauges, a secchi disc and other monitors. It was a great way to test our current app! After a bit of trouble finding internet connection, I was able to easily record observations, including measurements and invasive eurasian milfoil. I spoke at length with Meaghan about different testing protocols she’s heard of, and got her thoughts on our efforts.  Overall, very positive, and we’re definitely moving in the right direction!

Exploring the river

It was great to see the action on the river in this area. We saw sailing lessons and rowing clubs. There are a few restaurants along this stretch between Rockliffe Yacht Club off the Aviation Parkway up until where the Parliament Buildings are. We also saw some ‘unnatural’ shoreline.

Where two rivers meet

I often walk and run along the Rideau River, and it was amazing to see if coming into the Ottawa. Things like pH, conductivity and temperature were all different at the point where these two rivers met. Meaghan explained that each river and lake have their optimal levels for these.  Thanks again to the Ottawa River Keepers for taking me out with them. Can’t wait until the next adventure!
