Lake Erie Rangers
Since 2021, we’ve supported community capacity in the Lake Erie watershed. In partnership with many, we’ve embarked on data collection and restoration projects.

Growing Canadians' connection between freshwater and ocean health
We build capacity in local groups to organize their own water themed events during Ocean Week each year, with a focus on hands-on community science.

Co-designing municipal programs
We co-designed an integrated project with the municipality of Val-des-Monts, monitoring 48 lakes and integrating field testing with lab testing. From custom testkits to new process flows for data, we adapted our existing tools to fit into their goals. We also embarked on a simpler way to share data openly.

Co-designing tools to assess livestock drinking water risks
Working with the University of Regina and partners across Saskatchewan, we’re using scientifically validated correlations between community science tools and risk of algal blooms to protect livestock and catch early warning signs in their dugouts and sloughs.

Developing national guidance and tools
In the UK, we’re prototyping new ways to help groups mobilize volunteers and set up sustainable monitoring programs. Water Rangers is a key project partner in CaSTCo, a national effort to establish guidelines for better collaborations between communities and water companies, building trust in community-collected data and influencing better integrations.

Establishing a community-run E. coli lab
We launch the Water Rangers Community Water Lab in the UK, the first completely volunteer-run lab of its kind. Local volunteers collect water samples from popular swimming spots that don’t have regular monitoring, test them for E. coli, and get results back within 24 hours. We built a model for local businesses to sponsor spots, and custom software to record and share results.

Empowering educators with hands-on tangible lessons
Water Rangers has equipped hundreds of teachers with tools to provide hands-on learning. From exploring scientific concepts to discussing climate anxiety, our education friends have used Water Rangers to teach over 30,000 students!

Fish health
We’re working with Blue Fish Canada to engage young anglers in water quality and fish health and habitat. The primary purpose of the project is to grow the capacity of youth to participate in community-based water monitoring and water stewardship in Ottawa as they learn about sustainable ecosystems and fish.
