(Application period closed) Summer job: Community Trainer (Toronto region)

(Combination remote work but must be based in Niagara or Toronto (ON) for in-person work sessions and excursions)

Rate: $21/hour
Time: 32 hours/week for 16 weeks, from May to August. Pending funding, it may be extended into the Fall.

We’re looking for a passionate summer student who loves engaging people in water science and stewardship! The community-based trainer will coordinate and present educational webinars and events, attend fairs and other activities (in compliance with COVID restrictions) to teach Canadians how to monitor water quality, and manage and share water quality data. The Trainer will translate and communicate complex scientific information into digestible lessons for the general public and deliver these lessons both in person and online. The Trainer will also be responsible for improving educational content based on feedback from supervisor, teachers, and program participants.

This role offers new environmental professionals much in terms of skill development, including communication and leadership skills. To support in developing digital communication skills, the Trainer will also be given the opportunity to help with social media, photo taking, and blogging.

Remote vs in person breakdown is approximately 50/50. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Days off in lieu will be awarded. Social media, photography, blogging, and data management are great additional skills. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are be a huge asset (and compensated at $0.68/km).

Eligibility

Due to funder requirements, to be eligible, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period*;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
