Job opportunity: User experience developer

Water Rangers is seeking a talented and innovative User Experience Developer to join our team! As a User Experience Developer, you will play a crucial role in redeveloping the Water Rangers website, specifically focusing on developing the user experience of our Watershed Reports and better supporting our community impact in community-based water monitoring efforts. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate design concepts into functional web interfaces that prioritize user satisfaction, accessibility, and usability, with the goal of making water testing more accessible to all!

Duties and responsibilities

  • Support the redevelopment of the Water Rangers website and Watershed Reports website, with a specific focus on enhancing the user experience.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop digital assets (including animations, photographs, infographics, and interactive web components) for digital campaigns, with a special focus on the launch of the Watershed Reports. These assets should be implemented across digital platforms, from email newsletters to social media content and community engagement initiatives, to promote and increase audience engagement.
  • Implement responsive and accessible web interfaces using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Ruby-on-Rails and other front-end technologies. Ensure cross-browser compatibility and optimize website performance for fast loading times, accessibility, and smooth navigation.
  • Test and debug websites across different devices and platforms to ensure consistent user experiences.
  • Strategize and implement features and content aimed at building and engaging the Water Rangers audience, fostering community participation, and increasing user retention.
  • Analyze user behaviour and engagement metrics to identify opportunities for audience growth and develop data-driven strategies to enhance user acquisition and retention. Integrate user feedback and analytics data to iterate on the user experience design and improve overall usability.

Knowledge and skills

  • Proven experience as a front-end developer and/or user experience developer, with a strong portfolio showcasing web projects with excellent user experience.
  • Detail-oriented and creative problem solver with a passion for creating intuitive and visually appealing web interfaces.
  • Proficiency in front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and responsive design frameworks (e.g., Bootstrap). Experience in developing with WordPress or Ruby on Rails is a bonus.
  • Experience with web accessibility standards and guidelines (e.g., WCAG) and implementing accessibility features.
  • Strong understanding of user experience principles, usability testing methodologies, and user-centered design processes.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a small team to produce high-quality copy and media assets.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Specific design skills, such as photography, videography, illustration, graphic design, animation, or related skills, are not required but desired; your design skills will be valuable, and there will be opportunities to use them in your work!

This position is funding-dependent, and you’ll have to fill out a qualifying document to receive your full job offer.

  • Start date: Mid-June 2024
  • This is a 6-month contract with the potential to extend
  • 32 hours per week
  • $28/hr + 3 weeks vacation (pro-rated)
  • If you use your own computer and phone, you will receive a $100/month work-from-home stipend.
  • The ideal candidate would be located in Ottawa or Toronto, but we will interview exceptional candidates outside of those areas, but you must be located in Canada.

 We work as a remote team. As a team member, you are expected to:

  • Work well independently.
  • Manage your own schedule based on weekly priorities we set together and report to the core team using our project management tools.
  • Attend regular check-ins and meetings with remote teams to set goals and report on tasks.
  • Be creative and enthusiastic to solve problems.
  • Take initiative to research methods to achieve your goals.
  • Be willing to ask questions.

You must be:

  • aged 30 or under at the beginning of the internship per funding requirements;
  • a graduate from a post-secondary institution (does not have to be a STEM grad) – Canadian or International;
  • a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada;
  • legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations; and
  • not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.
