Conductivity is how we measure the ionic content (such as chloride, nitrate, sulfate, sodium, magnesium, calcium, or iron) in a body of water by measuring the water’s ability to conduct electricity. Conductivity can be used as an early warning system for potential problems that warrant further testing. If we see a variance (either lower or higher) from our baseline readings, we know something may have gone wrong. While lab testing is usually the only way to determine what is causing the reading, higher readings could indicate a pollution event has taken place. Learn more.

About our conductivity meter

  • Validation: We’ve compared many conductivity meters, and this one is by far the most accurate and user-friendly! We’ve worked with scientists and conservation authorities to compare it with professional probes. Learn more here
  • Calibration: The conductivity meter you receive will be calibrated. Our conductivity meter needs to be calibrated once a year if the summer testing season, or twice a year if testing year-round. Learn more about our studies to see how it holds its calibration here.
  • Range of 0 to 20,0000 µS/cm, which is perfect for freshwater streams, lakes, and rivers
  • Range of -5 to 60°C for water temperature
  • Comes with 4x LR44 batteries

In action

Conductivity might sound technical, but it tells a powerful story about what’s in your water. A sudden spike can have natural causes, or point to something worth looking into, like road salt runoff affecting a local lake or river. Our Lake Erie Rangers community is putting this to work right now, monitoring the Lake Erie Basin alongside other key water quality indicators. Curious what they’re finding? Explore the data and learn more about the program.

Parameter FAQs

Water Rangers conductivity meters measure the conductivity of freshwater in µS, or microsiemens.

Water will measure different results of conductivity depending on it’s condition, shown below;

Distilled water0.5 – 3 µS
Melted snow2 – 42 µS
Has effects on fish reproductionover 500 µS
Tap water50 – 800 µS
Potable water30 – 1500 µS
Freshwater streams100 – 1,000 µS
Industrial wastewater10,000 µS
Sea water55,000 µS
