Description

Changes in pH, hardness, alkalinity, and chlorine can all indicate a change in water chemistry that may have resulted from a chemical spill, sewage, or algal blooms.

Benefits of teststrips

  • Testing is fast, easy, and convenient
  • Reduces the chance of human error associated with other tests
  • No measuring samples or counting number of drops
  • Require less technique

Considerations

  • Ensure proper handling and storage
  • Store in a cool dry place
  • Bottle comes with 50 test strips

pH

pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of water.  It is usually measured by using a colorimetric test –  test strip changes colour with increased acidity or alkalinity. pH varies naturally within streams as a result of photosynthesis.  There are a number of reasons that water may have extreme pH values:

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14:

A ph range of 6.5 – 8 is optimal for freshwater.

A range of 8 – 9 is optimal for estuarine and sea water.

Acidic 0 to 6.9

Neutral 7

Alkaline 7.1 to 14
