We’re using conductivity as a proxy for harmful water quality in Prairie ‘dugouts’ (man-made ponds used to store water for livestock watering, irrigation and more). According to research by the University of Regina, high conductivity levels (above 2.0 mS/cm) correlate with high sulphate levels, which can be dangerous to livestock. Because testing for sulphates accurately requires time-consuming, expensive lab samples, it’s not practical for landowners and researchers to collect samples regularly. This version has been designed to be as simple and easy-to-use as possible for busy landowners. By testing conductivity weekly, landowners can, in just a few minutes, get an indicator of changes in their water quality and respond accordingly to protect their livestock.

Interpreting results

While these results can’t tell you for certain that there are no risks, they can signal many instances of high sulphates. Use this as a ‘first test’ to know when further action and testing might be necessary. Rule of thumb: if conductivity is more than 2.0 mS/cm, or you see a big increase in a small length of time (e.g., if your conductivity reading increases from 1.3 mS/cm to 1.9 mS/cm in less than 2 weeks), proceed with caution!
